Glassmaking Forehearth Control
One of the most difficult furnace control problems are the glass manufacturing
forehearth furnaces. Molten glass is the temperature range between 2,300
and 2,800° F is distributed in the forehearth furnace, which brings
the temperature of the molten glass to a uniform level prior to the next
glass manufacturing step. Controlling glass furnace temperatures, levels
and forehearth temperatures is a difficult task. Long temperature response
time causes conventional controllers to cycle on set-point changes. Changes
in production rate affect process gain and time lag for the temperature
control loops resulting in nonlinear dynamics.
